Think Different: The value of Information Technology studies in High School [Update]
On Monday 1 September I’ll be giving a short summarised version of this talk to the Grade 9 parents of Silvermine Academy. It’ll be an attempt to convine them and their children to choose Information Technology as a learning area for their Grade 10 year in 2009. Slides will be posted afterwards.
PHP: First Contact (1 hour talk on PHP for the modern Web)
In this talk I explore a brief history of the PHP programming language and look at the impact it has had on the modern world wide web. I present a series of websites which take advantage of PHP features and highlight their relative usefulness. Heavy PHP consumers like Yahoo!, Facebook, and Digg will be discussed. In closing we take an indepth look at how PHP enabled the incredible development of opensource tools like Wordpress, Drupal, phpBB, and MediaWiki.
Who: Anyone interested in understanding how webprogramming works. No specific skills neccesary.
PHP for Web 2.0: Introductory course (4 weeks)
The course covers a basic introduction to the PHP language. It will be presented from a command-line scripting point of view, and from a web-programming point of view. It includes an introduction to interacting with a MySQL database in order to serve up a dynamic website.
Requirements: Excellent knowledge of Computers, the Internet, and fair typing skills.
